The Cherry Springs Star Party will be June 10th -13th this year. If you have never been to Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania, you have been missing the opportunity to observe under some really dark skies, and it’s only a few hours ride from home. The park is 48 acres surrounded by the 262,000 acre Susquehanna State Forest in Potter County in Galeton, Pennsylvania (near Coudersport). We observe from a flat clear field, which is actually a plateau on top of the mountain. The Park has been dedicated to astronomy, and has been designated a Dark Sky Park. They have installed a number of telescope pads and there are many electrical receptacles for astronomical use (they don’t like you to hook up your RV at night). On regular weekends they have four domes for rent for about $25 a night. There is a modern restroom without white lights (only red). They don’t allow white lights, campfires, or green lasers on observing nights. Last year they installed Wireless Internet for our use (this year I think they may charge a nominal fee). It is truly an astronomer’s haven.
Last year George, Pat L., Patrick M., Greg and I attended and, despite limited observing weather, we had a good time. There are talks and vendors with NEAF- like deals. We meet a lot of old friends and always make new ones. There is usually a food vendor, but the last I heard they had not been successful in securing one for this year yet. The event is put on by the Astronomical Society of Harrisburg (ASH – the club Keith’s brother, Robert, belongs to). So far, George and I have had our registrations confirmed. They limit registrations to 500, but do not fill up as fast as the Black Forest Star Party (in the same location in September). Here is the link to the web site to register and get additional information: http://www.astrohbg.org/CSSP/Information.html
I hope you consider going this year.
