Low-Cost “Starter Scopes”

Postby GeorgeN » Fri Dec 11, 2009 5:42 pm

This (http://www.skyandtelescope.com/equipmen ... 45547.html) Sky & Telescope magazine article gives a nice review of ‘starter scopes’ that would make good presents for both children and adults. Note the download pdf file as well as the links to recommended telescopes.

The article mentions Galileoscopes, and Kopernik Observatory will be offering a program related to them as part of the 2010 Winter Star Party.

I see they list the Orion Starblast 4.5 Astro Reflector. I would highly recommend this scope for a beginner scope at any level. This was my first telescope, and I loved it! My 3 year old daughter now uses it on her own to view the moon. It is very affordable, and the optics are great for the $$$. It offers everything you need to learn about telescopes.

George - great thread to post!

Merry Christmas as Santa packs up all of the scopes to give to the children ;-)

I asked Santa for a 36-inch Dob, but he said that it was too big to fit in his sled, so he’s bringing me another Galileoscope instead! ;)

…..but seriously…… Yep, the Orion 4 Starblast is a great scope to start out with!!
